WEEK 8 10/11/11 Garment Deconstruction

boiibiviyThis week we were continuing the exercise with Tailored Jacket. However this time we had to deconstruct it and take apart pieces which it is made from in a way we want it. The patterns we got we arranged on the chair. The exercise was to develop the given shapes and create new.

We were asked to try the pieces in different ways. We played with jacket to get many ideas for the actual design.

When we achieved the unique shape we were happy with we took the structure of the chair and put it onto the mannequin. Then we started to play arond with it to get different ideas and explore new exciting shapes... That are the designs we came up with.

The final deconstruction on and off the chair...

Sketchbook work...

I personally think a work of Hussein Chalayan is worth to look at when playing with idea of deconstruction.

Interesting artist to look at: Anthony Cragg and his 'hundred sculptors at any one time'.

Tara Donovan and her inspiring sculptural forms based on her ability to see, imagine and create forms, shapes and textures. What I think is essential to create innovative design based on deconstruction.

WEEK 7 25/10/11 Garment Deconstruction

This project provides experience of the design process, through the improvised restructuring of a more complex 'found' garment- a tailored jacket. During this process, we will asked to challange our own familiar assumptions about this garment, concering its identity, context and style what is meant by 'inside and outside', 'back and front', top and bottom.

We began by investigating uncut jacket. We separated lining from the jacket and we improvised with the lining by draping it on the stand.

Then we investigated the structure of the complete, uncut jacket- focusing on every aspect: layers, outer fabric, wadding, lapels, shoulder pads, stitching, seams, buttons, pockets etc.
We experimented with a sustained series of modifications through improvisation working on the stand.

Once resolved I I clarified my design solution and recorded my work in the sketchbook.

WEEK 5 11/10/11 Glue and cloth acticity

The task given was to create the structure from chair and any object of interest to make unusual shape. Working in a group we arranged a structure from two chairs creating an interesting shape that we could work around. We began by covering the object in cling film so it consolidated the structure. Following this, we encased the structure in thights covering the whole structure. The next stage was to soak the structure in PVA glue ensuring every area was covered.

Next week we continued with exercise when the structure was stiff. We created the structure that coud be placed onto the mannequi in a unconventional way. When we were creating the structure we tried not to think about the end result as a piece to fit around the body. that is how we got interesting shape we could experiment with. We began positioning the intriguing garment around the mannequin, bouncing ideas of each other.
